Here are the names and addresses of every landholder in Kerry in 1876 who had at least one acre. This is a really interesting list of those who owned rather than those who tenanted Kerry land at the end of the nineteenth century. The main fact that strikes me when I read down the names is the number of landowners who are not resident in the county, with the largest landholder the Marquess of Lansdowne , of Lansdowne House, London with 94,983 acres. But on the other hand the next two largest landholders, the Earl of Kenmare with 91,080 acres and Henry Herbert of Muckross with 47,238 acres ,both have addresses in Killarney.
Kay, many thanks for posting this.
Patrick Lyons and i are working on the Lyne, Lyons, Leyne and variations.
Your blog is very interesting as, indeed, all your posts are.
However, this blog appears to be missing at least the first page……..it starts at “H”.
I trust there is also “A” to “G”.
Thanks again,
Tim
Tim, its all there – if you just click on the link. If you are still no getting it, if you email me, I will send the 5 pages of it to you.
Thank you for this information. The transition of land ownership from being 90% owned by Protestant in the beginning of the 20th century to thereafter being 90 % owned by Catholic has been referred to as The Bloodless Revolution. This feat was achieved through Balfours British Land Commission in 1891 and continued under the newly formed Irish Land Commission in 1922
The Land Commission has now ceased operations since 1987 and a moratorium on its workings is in place until 2087.
I wanted to look for the Prendergasts but pg. 144 is not here. The document jumps from M to S.
Suzanne, the entire list is there down to the last one which is the name Yielding. I have re-checked. You should click on the link under the image of the table of names, where it says Kerry Landholders 1876 – My Kerry Ancestors in heavy type.
Yes, later I saw it was there. I don’t know why it didn’t show up at first.
Suzanne, no worries thats fine.
…wonderful, are there earlier pages with A-C surname land owners in Kerry available? That’s where I would fall. Thank you.
Debra, the entire list – Ahern to Yielding is available – just click on the block underneath the image – it says Kerry Landholder 1876 – My Kerry Ancestors.
What am I doing wrong? There is nothing underneath the image of the table. It doesn’t say Kerry Landholder 1876 underneath the image on my computer screen. How do I get the link to show up? Thanks.
I don’t know what you are doing wrong! Not to worry anyhow. I will email you separately the list. Kay C.
Thank you for the publication which includes (I firmly believe) is my relative William Thompson of Parnageragh, Castleisland. Hopefully I am not ‘out of line’ seeking help or advice. I have found the Will of William Thompson online and have original ‘hand written’ court documents relating to his estate that corroborate him and his named family among the effects of my parents many years ago. However, whilst finding details of his wife Mary Roche and most of his children I am finding it difficult to find records relating to William Thompson (jnr) who is somehow the link with my grandfather William Richard Thompson. To conclude, is it possible to establish if this William Thompson of Parknageragh, Castleisland is the same William Thompson who is named as being the builder & occupier of Parknageragh House, Tobermaing which is currently the subject of Architectural interest by Kerry County Council If you can give me some direction I would be most grateful.
Kind regards,
Alex, I would need some more information on your Thompson family. I will send you separately a Query Form which should help in finding further details.
I see that you are researching the Thompson family from Ballygamboon near Castlemaine. I am descended from John Thompson the elder brother of William who married Hanora Eager.
I have only very recently traced my Thompson family back to Ireland from Burma. My ancestor in Burma was Richard Thompson son of John Richard was baptised 1807 Kilnanare/Kilcoleman,Co Kerry,Ireland. Church of Ireland.
If you are willing I would like to exchange information on the Thompson family.
Regards,
Christopher Thompson
Christopher, this is wonderful – I first started on this research in 2016 and new facts are emerging all the time. I will contact you personally.
