Tithe Applotments for the Civil Parish of Duagh have somehow not been published in the normal National Archives Tithe Applotments. Tom Pius Moloney has had the patience and interest to compile in a very accurate and readable way, the entire Parish Tithes from 1824 to 1837. If anyone would like me to look up a particular entry, please email me caballykay@gmail.com

Mr. Tom Pius Moloney: I am a great great grand daughter of an Edmund Mckenna (Guinea, GUina, etc) and an Ellen Stack of Rathea or Duagh area. Kay Moloney suspects Ellen may be a daughter of a Maurice Stack Sr. through her most recent genealogy search for me. If either of these names are present in your recently accomplished work as mentioned above I would appreciate it if you could take a look at those names. Any assistance or hints are greatly appreciated.
Perhaps I misunderstood this and this email is heading to Kay Moloney-I guess I am getting desperate here Kay. There is a small group of us both here and in Ireland in contact with one another in an effort to connect via DNA and so forth. One in particular is John Kennedy who is striving to look into “Cancelled land rentals” or something to that extent. In the meantime I cling to a Maurice Stack Sr. One other item is the use of Leon as middle name of some of my Maurice ancestors I find intriguing.
Thank you
Sheila
Sheila, your request re Duagh Tithes found its way to me ok. I had already searched there for you without success. It would not have been there anyhow as Maurice Stack lived in Rathea which is in the Civil Parish of Kilshebane (not Duagh). The ‘Cancelled land rentals’ for for Griffiths Valuation – if you look at the Research Report I gave you a full list of those. It only deals with land after 1853. DNA is probably your only bet now. Your main problem, your only problem in fact, is that the records you are looking for are too early for the Catholic parish records. They just don’t exist I am afraid.
Hi. My GGGrandmother was Annabella (Ann) Styles and believe her father was James Styles who died in Knockavallig Duagh in 1869. I have found marriage records for 4 of James children. Richard married Catherine Gleasure , Maryanne married Francis Gleasure and Frances married Francis Parkinson. All were married in Kilflynn COI in 1850s. The forth James married Catherine Doody and is present in Knockavallig at a birth in 1868. Annabella married James Pope circa 1843 and had 4 children Ellen my GGrandmother who married in Clare in 1868, Frances , Ann and John. I cannot find a marriage for Annabella and James. Neither can I find a birth. The only thing that comes close is the Ann born to James Silles and Susan Wall in Balinvoher Lixnaw in 1825. They also had a son Richard born in 1827. Was James Silles in Balinvoher in the 1820s and James Styles in Duagh later on the same person. I’ve battled with this for years but I’m almost there. Thanks
Martin, I wouldn’t think that Annabella Styles father would have died in Duagh. It doesnt make sense if there if the famiky lived in Kilflynn as you note from the marriages of the daughters. James Styles of Ballinviher sounds more likely.
Just to be certain, see if you can find James Styles in Griffiths Valuation in both locations. Another hint – have you logged the sponsors of the baptisms & witnesses of marriages – where are these people from &are they clise relatives or neighbours (again from Griffiths)?
Kay
Sorry Kay. They were married in Duagh not Kilflynn as I previously mistakingly wrote. How could I have made such a mistake as I have years of study put into this. DNA has tied me with the Gleasure family in Kilflynn and recently with the Silles of Balinvoher. I know that the Silles and Gleasures are connected. I have also since learned that Annabella Styles was more likely Ann Sells born 1811 in Balinvoher to James Sells and Ann Wall and that James Styles in Duagh was her brother. DNA seems to be also pointing that way. Annabellas daughter Ellen Pope my GGrandmother b1845 married Thomas Liddane1867 in Cross church West Clare. I have loads of info on her hard life, her 12 children 4 that died before 10 y , 1 killed WW1 , 3 emigrated to N Z, 3 to NY and 1 to UK. The only one that stayed in West Clare was my Grandmother Mary Liddane
Kay. I don’t know if you got my earlier reply but those marriages took place in Duagh and not Kilflynn as I mistakingly wrote on original post
I would like to know what ever records you have for a Deady or Dady
Sean I don’t understand the question. I don’t have records but I research them when requested by genealogists. See home page of http://www.MyKerryAncestors.com
Hello,
Are there any existing records for burials at the Duagh or Listowel graveyard(s)? I am looking for the burial of my 2x great grandfather, Denis Sheehan(Sheehy) who died in May, 1874 at Flemby, Ballymac, Tralee. He was living with his family there as his wife, Bridget Healy, had family who was living in that area. Denis was born c. 1823, the son of James and Ellen Sheehy/Sheehan. Denis is likely buried in Duagh or Listowel since he was born in the Listowel area. Thank you for any help or drection. GB New Jersey Shore USA
Greg, burial records were never kept in any parish at any time. There may be a few parishes where burials were logged by an interested person, but not an official record. Kerry County Council who are now responsible for burials have a website where they records they hold are listed. But you will find that these records only go back to the 1960s in some cases. If you are really lucky you might ge back to 1920.
Descendants would of course love to be able to find their ancestor’s graves, but as well as not being listed, these graves for the most par never had markings, monuments or such reflecting who was buried in each grave. Only wealthy people had their graves marked. Over the last two hundred years old graves have grown over with time. Joe Maher did a great service a number of years ago, he visited every graveyard in Kerry and photographed and indexed every headstone that he could find and that was legible. His website will also give you an idea of what a number of the older graveyards now look like.
Greg, there are no records listed in any graveyard anywhere in Kerry for anytime in the 19th century and for a good deal of the 20th century. Kerry County Council have an excellent website but most of the burials recorded are from the 1940s – 1960s. For instance burials are recorded in St. Michael’s Listowel from 1961 and in St. Brigid’s Duagh from 1967. But I wonder why you think your grandfather was buried in either of the graveyards when he lived in Flemby, Ballymac?
Hi Kay,
Just curious…when did St. Michael’s Cemetery, Listowel open? I see that the church, St. Mary’s, had early roots …1820’s. I’ve been in touch with several Sheehan DNA matches and all of them are pointing to north Kerry as the place of origin of my Sheehan’s. I’m not expecting to find a burial record for Denis Sheehan/Sheahan/Sheehy but I’m interested in knowing about St. Michael’s. Thank you.

Greg, As you say, construction of the ‘new’ church (which is the present St Mary’s Catholic church in the Square) was started around 1820. That replaced a ‘Mass House’ in Tae Lane, at the back of the present AIB. That in turn had replaced the first Catholic Parish church in St Michael’s Graveyard – the tower of which still stands. There are people buried in the tombs there from at least 1798 but probably marked graves would only exist there from the late 1800s.
I am desperate to get info on my great grandfather Jeremiah Teehan. He was born in Duagh about 1870. Can anybody come to my rescue. I seem to be hitting a brick wall.
Did leave from Valentia or Cobh
for USA.
Many thanks Joan Sargent
Joan, as I said in a pm, there is no record, Church or Civil of a Jeremiah Teahan (or Maurice Teahan) born in Duagh. You do not seem to have the correct information Neither would anyone from north Kerry have ‘left’ from Valentia for New York. Only two ships left from Valenia and they were carrying entirely locals from the Iveragh Peninsula. See <strong>my blogg>.
