TOWNLANDS

There are 2756 townlands in Kerry.  That is enough to faze anyone not familiar with the County, in their search for ancestors.   Added to that is the complication of different spellings used at different times for exactly the same places.  It is important to get to know your ancestor’s townland, when you want to consult any of the mapping supports available.  Best for mapping is the Ordnance Survey of Ireland maps which include historical maps.

Our Irish Townlands are the smallest geographic division in use.   In the list of Kerry Townlands provided in our Links & Resources, you will also see the number of acres in each townland ranging from19 acres in Brickeen Island (Killarney) to 2170 acres in Clahane (Annagh, Tralee).   This list (Wikipedia) is the one I use all the time and it will also tell you the Barony, the Civil Parish and the Poor Law Union to which the townland belongs.  It is an invaluable resource and will immediately save you many hours of searching fruitlessly in the dark.
