MilitaryArchive.ie has released a third tranche of records from the Military Service (1916-1923) Pensions Collection (MSPC). It includes files relating to 53 Kerry people, 7 of whom are female.
These files are now added to the previous tranches giving in total 2839 released covering the entire country. There is a wealth of information in each file, of interest to both the local historian and the genealogist. Take for instance the file relating to Lizanne O’Brien, President of Tralee District Council of Cumann na mBan I remember Lizanne in Tralee when she must have been in her eighties, rosy cheecked with little round glass, the picture of innocence. Yet her record which has been corroborated by esteemed figures such as Paddy Cahill, a director of the “Kerry Champion”, Tralee, and Brigade O/C., North Kerry, Paddy Barry, Rock St., & John McCarthy, tells a different story.

my grandfather john byrne was a sergeant in the national army stationed at brian houlihan barracks he married my gran Mary Nammock from lower abbey street Tralee in Saint Johns in sept 1923. My granda was from Dublin and when he enrolled at Beggars Bush Barracks in 1922 his next of kin was a Mary Byrne his wife,i have tried to find how this could be possible but with no avail . The Nammocks where related to the Myers, and i think o sullivan families, how could i find out about my family.
Philip, that is an interesting one. Firstly I would say that you should get hold of the Civil Marriage Certificate. I have searched on IrishGenealogy.ie in the Civil Registrations for 1923 with both names – Byrne and Nammock (sometimes spelled Namock) and there is nothing coming up. (I tried for ‘Mary Nammock’ from 1921 – 1925 and nothing there). If you can get sight of a copy of this certificate, it will say on it if John was a widower or single. Do you have sight of the Marriage Certificate from St. Johns? It should also say on that if he was a widower or single as the Priest in this case is the actual Registrar.
I don’t know where you live but it is very easy to get this in the GRO (Government Registration Office) in Werburgh St., Dublin for €4. You will need to search the 1923 Marriage Register Book (from the shelves) for a relevant Register Vol and Page.
Let me know if you want any further help.
Kay
We don’t know what age Mary Nammock was when she married – there is a Mary Nammock listed in Abbey St., age 26. If this is the correct lady then she would have been 38 when she married John Byrne.
Thank you for contacting me, apologies for not contacting sooner. My grannies name was spelt wrong on the marriage cert, instead of Nammock they used Namack. Her and my granda John Byrne, bachelor got married on the 22nd of September 1923 at St Johns Tralee, by Fr Michael O`Leary CC. She was 19 years of age and lived in Abbey St Lower, the marriage was registered on the 30th of July 1924 by M Brick registrar. I have also found out that when i checked my grandas enrollment at Beggar Bush Barracks on November 1922 they had him down as married to a Mary Byrne. I am finding it hard to find out how they would have meet. I would be delighted if you could help me try and work out this puzzle once again Thank you very much. All the best Phil.
Phil, it just shows you all the mistakes and errors they used to make when registering people. The banks and social welfare would get very stroppy now if you had an incorrect name or even spelling on your birth/passport documents. I have no certain idea of how they met, but it would appear to me that John Byrne was serving in the National Army (if he was in Beggar’s Bush} and may well have served in Tralee and been attached to Ballymullen Barracks. I would advise you to check out this website http://www.curragh.info/contact.htm and then contact the Officer in Charge as directed. Best of luck with the ongoing search. Kay
